Subject: Pop Up Sump Plug seized, oil draining options? Posted by: H Lowson, York, United Kingdom | Posted: 07/07/2010 |
Great news, I thought I'd drain my sump to remove any petroil left (see Other Post)and the bottom sump plug is seized up solid and now rounded off! Bo--ocks!
So I removed the 17mm plug on the left side of the sump and both oil cooler pipes and a little more petroil flowed out but do those plugs not allow the sump to drain by much? The filter housing came off Ok but without having a spare sump to look at I don’t know what the other outlets lead to? If they just go into sealed oil galleries then I may still have a lot of fluid sat in the sump?
May I try and should suck it out the filler if that’s possible?
At this point I don’t want to remove my exhaust and sump as I'm sure they will be seized on too!
Has anyone got a sump off to look at and can anyone anywhere these queries |

G'day H,
Mate, that's a bit unusual for a sump plug to be seized. You really do need to remove it to get your oil and petrol out of the motor. I don't think you'd be able to get suction hose deep enough into the engine to get all the oil out. And besides, sooner or later you'll want to do things *properly* and get that sump plug out.
Ordinarily I would suggest some heat via a small blowtorch onto the head of the offending bolt/nut/plug... but we don't want to blow you and your bike to smithereens. Who says we ain't nice?!
You will have to remove that exhaust system sooner or later, too... so why not just bite the bullet, shear off and drill out any offending bolts, just go for it. Then you'll be able to get your sump off, and get a decent shot at the sump plug with the plate clamped to a work bench.
So as much as you don't want to remove the exhaust and sump, you really need to. Go on, do things properly; a shortcut is only likely to lead to more pain and misery. |
