Subject: Pop Up Petrol filled engine

Finally got to have a look at my bike which I abandoned after a good thrashing caused it starting losing petrol and oil on my floor after I'd left it overnight.
I just removed the clutch side panel to find weeping from the neutral switch causing the leak which I thought was oil. As I undid the switch half a gallon of petrol mixed with oil poured out of the gearbox!!! I was shocked !
So it seems that before I removed the tank 2 years ago something had failed allowing petrol to flow into the engine and box. I suspect the vacuum tube to the petrol tank tap had split possibly allow the fuel to flow out the tap and through the carbs? When I removed the tank 2 years ago I noticed the fuel pipes were very poor condition. I have not drained the rest of the oil yet from the sump but I suspect that will also be full of petrol!
My question really is is this a common problem if a fuel pipe lets air in? Will my engine be ok still even though petrol has say in the sump for sum years?
Should the carb floats have held back the petrol even if the tap was faulty?
I plan the drain out the oil try a new oil and filter change along with new fuel pipes and battery to re commision the bike soon. I'll try and flush the new oil through then change again pretty soon to clean any petrol pollutants out.

Has it got a vaccum tap and it's working right it will not flow fuel unless it has a vacuum on it, more likely it has a prime position that if it was left on flows fuel all the time, if the needle valves stick allowing petrol to flow straight through the carbs and into the bores, then past the rings and into the bottom end.Another option is if the carbs have nitrile o rings below the needle valve seats, they perish and allow fuel to flow int to the motor.
I would drain the motor buy a couple of cheap filters and a couple of gallons of cheap mineral oil. Put a filter in with cheap oil and get it started run it until up to temp and then switch off and drop the oil.
Put a second cheap filter and oil in and then run it on the road for 20 or 30 miles and then change again for decent oil and a good filter

Yep, thats about what I was thinking but dont want it to happen again. I have some spare orig carbs so may swap them over as I'd swapped them before due to a running fault but it didn't cure the problem anyway. Basically the bike wont run at a steady constant speed smoothly but its ok on Acc/Deceleration. So that problem cant be the carbs? The Rubber inlet tubes are perished due to age so I don't know if they are leaking either. Are new ones still available any where for a decent price?

Hi H,
same thing happened to me when I left my pop-up's fuel cock in Prime position for a fortnight. Turns out the one needle valve was scored and let the petrol into the engine. Flushed the petrol, did oil and filter refills with no problem. Since then the engine oil is always crystal clear ! No damage was done to the engine.
