G'day John,
The screws you refer to are for adjusting the pilot (idle) mixture. Turning them in will lean the mixture, turning them out will richen it.
I had a trawl through my workshop Suzuki GSX1100 manual, which also covers the 1000SZ... and all the wretched thing will say about the pilot screws is that they are 'preset'. Not the most helpful bit of info.
I would try starting with them 2 turns out from *lightly* seated.
Then when the engine is warmed up (a 15-20 minute ride will achieve this), adjust your idle speed to the correct RPM, then 'blip' the throttle.
1. If the revs are slow to drop back to idle speed, your idle (pilot) mixture is too lean. You will need to turn the screws out.
2. If the revs drop back immediately after the blip and then drop lower before returning back to the speed you set, then the mixture is too rich, and the screws will need to be turned in.
This is obviously a trial-and-error process, and takes a bit of fiddling. Adjusting those screws in that cramped space with a toasty hot engine can be character building!
All the best,
Mike. |

| But a little further flipping through the manual reveals that the 1000SD, which shares all jetting, settings, everything in common with the 1000SZ, has the pilot screw set at 1 1/4 turns. So try that as your starting-point. |
